Strongly influenced by Native American and Hispanic culture, New Mexico offers unforgettable nature experiences in summer and winter, a special cuisine that has influenced the entire country and very distinct architecture.

 

Its state capital Santa Fe, at the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo mountains, invites visitors to its picturesque lanes and streets, with mandated Pueblo-style architecture, offering a truly unique visual experience. Modern day visitors find the charming art galleries and restaurants to be a main attraction, but a student of history will find all the conflicts of American history right here. The ancient Pueblo Indians fought with the 16th century Spanish settlers, followed by the Apache, Navajo and Commanche tribes, and then the Mexican government, and finally the American cowboys and outlaws as they moved into this region. Remnants of all societies exist today evidenced by the many National Historic Landmarks, colonial churches, three UNESCO World Heritage Sites, as well as nearby pueblos which are among the oldest continuously inhabited villages in the U.S.A..
